I worry that the public has a discrete amount of empathy at any given time, and that placing so much of it on the fate of a Bichon Frise may mean that the next case of child abuse (like the one on the cover of today's NYT, for example) will be met with emotional numbing.

1. I find it hypocritical to place "pets" on such a high level in a country which condones so much cruelty to so called "farm animals." Until this hypocrisy subsides, I would never approve of a penalty such as the one in this case.

2. I find rage to be a mitigating factor. Repeated systematic abuse worries me a lot more than abuse like this- done in a fit of fury.

3. I think a fine and a warning would be sufficient for the heinous dog throwing. We've got murderers we are letting out of jail because there isn't enough space. Dog killers are WAY way down there, for me.

4. And I agree with you about the Chandra Levy case.
