Hi JC,

You made a great point about the "one v. many" involved in a tragedy. It reminds me of the Kitty Genovese murder, after which social psychologists posited that the number of witnesses to a crime is inversely proportional to the personal responsibility felt by each. I wonder if this is some sort of corollary to that.

On the other point, as a dog and cat lover myself (as well as the butt of family jokes from our children that we are squandering our attention on pets and will have none left when grandchildren come), I was really upset by that man's act of rage, but tend to agree with X that a fine and probation -- and perhaps hours of service at an animal shelter -- may have been more fitting.
