Mary - re: "What is AMD culture with respect to how technical people are treated. Do they get the resources they need? Is decision making very political with Jerry Sanders micromanaging and interfering?"

I have heard everything from Mad Man Sanders being a complete autocrat to him being a helpful manager - and everything in between.

I do know that Sanders will fire anyone and everyone who gets near him in a position to succeed him - witness Atiq Raza, Dick Previte, John East - Hector will be the next to go - within 6 to 9 months.

In Dirk's case, it appears that he was hired to do an original x86 design at around the same time that AMD BOUGHT NexGen as a life-saver for their failed K5 venture.

The NexGEN folks generated the K6 & K6-2 while Dirk was allowed to work independently with a new group on the K7 - AthWiper.

The AthWiper was a success - but now AMD and Dirk have not been able to follow up this success with a second winner.

Maybe he shot his wad on the K7 - I don't know - but one winner will not keep AMD afloat for very much longer.
