Well, the argument about die size is valid, but die cost could be illusory. If these parts are Athlon4 parts that have defective regions in the L2 cache, they are effectively costing AMD only what is needed to disable part of the cache and retest.

I can picture AMD continuing this procedure in the future, but creating mobile Duron parts by disabling cache and enabling PowerNow! in desktop Palomino processors with defective regions of L2 cache.
