Don't feel too bad. This is exactly what AMD went through when it switched from the K6 core to the Athlon core - the move from .25 K6-2 to .18 Athlon resulted in a larger core.

K6-2 81mm2 on .25 went to Tbird 120mm2 on .18 when AMD went from K6-2 to Thunderbird for their volume chip (though the 64K L2 Duron is only 100mm2)

Intel is going from 90mm2 .18 PIII to ~140mm2 P4 on .13. Demand is down and Intel has too much capacity anyway - it's not the end of the world.

AMD is going from 120mm2 .18 Athlon to 80mm2 .13 Athlon4.
