Compaq Blazes Trail With First 64-Bit ProLiant Server; New ISVs and Customers Join Compaq TrailBlazer Program
HOUSTON, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corp., (NYSE: CPQ - news) today announced the new ProLiant(TM) DL590/64, its first 64-bit industry-standard server incorporating the Intel® Itanium(TM) processor. Today's announcement reinforces Compaq's strategy for driving industry standards into the enterprise on its ProLiant server platform and it is the first step in its recently announced 64-bit enterprise computing initiative.
The ProLiant DL590/64 extends Compaq's leadership in providing customers with optimized enterprise solutions for demanding Internet and business- critical applications that require memory-intensive computing capabilities. The new ProLiant DL590/64 server is the de facto development platform for emerging operating systems and applications such as Microsoft 64-bit Windows® Advanced Server, Limited Edition. As one of the first industry- standard 64-bit platforms, the new ProLiant server now expands the opportunity for Linux application development beyond 32-bit to include 64-bit architectures.
``Today Compaq is demonstrating its unique commitment to defining and leading the evolution of industry-standard enterprise computing with our hallmark innovation and relentless focus on customer needs,'' said Mary McDowell, senior vice president and general manager, Compaq Industry Standard Server Group. ``Just as Compaq defined new standards and led the industry in 32-bit computing with ProLiant servers, we are now leading the way to 64-bit computing with an industry-standard architecture on the ProLiant server.''
Building on the May announcement of the Compaq TrailBlazer program, a commitment to accelerate the early adoption of 64-bit industry-standard computing, Compaq also announced that several new key independent software vendors (ISVs) are porting their applications to IA-64, and additional customers are now beta testing Itanium solutions in the program. Looking forward, the new family of Itanium-based ProLiant servers will also be a critical platform for accelerating the porting of Compaq Tru64 UNIX, OpenVMS and NonStop Kernel environments to Itanium as announced by Compaq on June 25th.
Driving Industry-Standard Server Innovation into the Enterprise
The Compaq ProLiant DL590/64 expands the Compaq enterprise product portfolio, providing the first industry standards-based 64-bit server for customers that require substantial memory capacity and high floating-point processing. The new ProLiant model supports up to four Intel® Itanium- based(TM) processors and up to 64 GB of standard ECC SDRAM memory in a space-saving 7U-form factor. Built around the Intel 82460GX chipset, the DL590/64 also incorporates industry-leading Compaq management utilities such as Compaq Insight Manager, power supply utility, and array controller utility to deliver the maximum performance, availability and manageability required for Itanium-based applications.
Blazing New Trails in Industry-Standard 64-bit Computing
Compaq continues to expand the Compaq TrailBlazer program, announced in May 2001, to accelerate the adoption of 64-bit enterprise computing for customers by bringing the hardware and software development communities together to collaborate on new and emerging solutions for 64-bit industry standard computing on ProLiant servers.
``By participating in the Compaq TrailBlazer program, we enable customers migrating to IA-64 based products to quickly move forward with J.D. Edwards Collaborative Commerce application deployments on 64-bit ProLiant servers,'' said Michael Madden, group vice president and CTO, J.D. Edwards. ``Compaq's ProLiant server architecture and J.D. Edwards enterprise and supply chain applications deliver customers the ability to provide a highly stable, reliable and optimized platform for customers' 64-bit Itanium e-businesses.''
Compaq expects solutions such as large database, data marts and data warehousing as well as applications that can run solely in memory, such as business intelligence and supply chain management, to be among the first to benefit from the Itanium architecture. Compaq global alliance partners and ISV partners developing these solutions include Blue Martini, Citrix, J.D. Edwards, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, SAS Institute and Steel Eye. Some of the new TrailBlazer customers testing solutions include POPcast Communications Corp., Raytheon Company, and Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
