The typical crash-scenes, where Windows can be blamed, are:

1) Faulty drivers, typically not provided by Microsoft.
2) User interface crashes (explorer.exe). Sometimes provoked by user interface add-ins, virus scanners etc.
3) High Windows loads that could have been prevented by proper resource access control.
4) Some components, that are used by vital parts fail.

On a Linux server, these are typically handled this way:

1) Only very few drivers are used, and the built-in drivers typically take precedence of 3rd party drivers, and default settings are typically conservative instead of speed optimizing.
2) User interface on a server is text-mode. It NEVER crashes, (is never used), and is 100% multitasking. Even if the harddisk crashes, the user interface still runs.
3) Windows is typically not configured for limiting user access to resources, which is typically done on Linux systems, either by apps themselves (like php), or by using the ulimit options. This hasn't much to do with capabilities of the OS, it's mostly something with the administrators mental capabilities.
4) Linux software typically runs directly on top of the kernel and does not use any components shared by other systems (like ODBC etc.). Many services are compiled into the programs instead of having them as separate components in the system.

As you can see, Windows XP doesn't make Microsoft catch up fully with the competition on stability - it only improves the situation.
