No More Mr. Nice Guy Rep. Gary Condit stops cooperating with police, rejecting their request that he take a polygraph test. Instead, in a peremptory move, Condit's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, hires Barry Colvert, an ex-FBI agent, to administer a test under conditions favorable to Condit. Surprise, surprise: Lowell announces that "the congressman was not deceptive in any way and in fact had a probability of deception of less than one-hundredth of 1% to the only questions that mattered." What does this mean? Joshua Micah Marshall j-marshall.com notes that "one of the bullet points on Colvert's resume is that he did the interrogations of Aldrich Ames," the spy who beat three FBI polygraph tests. fas.org "Now I don't know if the tests Ames beat were administered by Colvert," Marshall adds. "But it seems like a definite possibility. So it's not just that Ames beat a lie detector test. It may be that he beat this expert." Colvert has been involved in one other high-profile case since entering private practice: In January 1998, Teamsters ex-president Ron Carey hired him to administer a polygraph; Colvert declared that Carey had passed with flying colors. Carey was subsequently indicted for perjury; he has pleaded not guilty.
