The generally accepted view is that El Nino/La Nina is an oscillation that reflects the natural noise in the climate system. I only once saw something on the volcanic theory and nothing since. What is more controversial is whether the El Nino/La Nina cycle is changing in response to global warming. There is some evidence of that which would tend to reject the volcanic theory.
