Thanks for the reply and the war story...

In a way, it's kind of comforting to know that someone with as much experience as yourself doesn't have some deeply complicated extra-special method for dealing with shocks. I know that some traders urge patience - such as "cover half the position, see how bad it gets on the other half and if it might not come back." Of course, one problem with such a policy is that whatever (decreasing by the second) capital is caught up in the gone-bad position can't be deployed elsewhere, and, of course, sometimes (unlike 1/03 and following), things really don't get better. Still, when dealing with minor shocks, it can sometimes pay not to let the stop get hit - so long as you have clearly defined rules for doing so and aren't just playing games with yourself.
