<<Send me links to "the schoolhouse stories" so that I may get up to speed on this most important matter.>>

Not a link but this happened to a friend. His son came home and was doing square roots on his calculator and asked a question about them. My friend showed his son how to do square roots with a pencil and paper, something that wasn't on the school's agenda. The son mentioned it in class and my friend got called in for an ass chewing. He had to take it as his son was being considered for the Air Force Academy and the principal threatened to screw that up.

This wasn't a private school, it's a public school that spends $7,500 on each student per year. This class had 6 students per teacher. Most of the graduates can't make change on a $20 for a $5 purchase without a calculator.
