Dow Jones Online News, 07/17/2001 05:47

BEIJING -(Dow Jones)- French telecom equipment maker Alcatel S.A. (F.ALC) confirmed Tuesday it's in talks with the Chinese government to take a majority stake in the Shanghai Bell Telecom Equipment Manufacturing Co. joint venture.

Alcatel has a 31.65% stake in the company and wants to raise that to a controlling share of at least 51%, a company spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires.

Shanghai Bell is one of China's largest manufacturers of telecommunications switching equipment. It is 60% owned by the Ministry of Information Industry, China's telecom regulator. A Belgian government investment fund holds 8.35%.

Alcatel has 17 joint ventures and wholly owned companies in China, as well as five research and development centers, together accounting for 5,000 employees and $500 million in investment.
