How do you think the following effects that argument?

Pretty dumb, huh.

When I first saw that news, my first thought was that their timing was horrid, but later I saw that they had reported the event quite a while ago at some conference and it was only just reported in the media. I don't have a good memory for such detail, but I think they said the report was last fall so they must have created those embryos maybe a year ago and made the decision to do it even earlier. At that time there would have been no way for them to know that right now the President would be pondering the question. So maybe they're not that dumb. Unethical, perhaps, but not dumb.

As far as I know there are plenty of stem cells available

I'm not sure about that. Again, I'm vague, but I recall some discussion of an option to confine research to "lines" that already exist, whatever lines means. The argument was that, for the purpose of stem cells, all embryos are not created equal and that there's not enough diversity in what is already available to assure the most promising stem cells. I don't understand any of this enough to have an opinion on it. I'm just reporting what might be an explanation.

Slight change of subject. We were talking earlier about libertarians and (non-libertarian) social conservatives coexisting in the same party. This issue makes me wonder about pro-lifers and big business. Sooner or later, someone is going to make a lot of money out of this stem cell thing. You'd think the business lobby would want it to be us, not the Europeans or Asians.

Karen, when you were arguing with me...

Karen doesn't argue. She discusses.

It's one of the many neat things about her.
