Santa Clara, California, July 16 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. reduced the prices of some chips for laptops and cheaper desktop computers by as much as 37 percent, as the biggest semiconductor maker fends off rivals and prepares new products. Intel cut the cost of its fastest, 1-gigahertz Pentium III mobile-computer chips to $401 each from $637. A 900-megahertz model now runs $268, rather than $423. Rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. in May introduced new laptop chips, and since December has increased its market share 5 percentage points to 22 percent on sales of chips for cheap PCs, according to preliminary data from Mercury Research. Intel, with 76 percent of the market, is preparing to unveil smaller laptop chips and has cut prices to win sales and revive demand. Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, dropped the price of its inexpensive Celeron chips to as low as $64. The cost of 900MHz, 850MHz and 800MHz versions each fell by 14 percent, with a 766MHz model dropping 7 percent. The company cuts prices several times a year as its product needs and manufacturing processes change, spokesman Robert Manetta said. The price of Intel's Pentium 4 and Xeon chips for server computers were unchanged. Such price cuts are taking a toll on profit at Intel and Advanced Micro, analysts said. Advanced Micro said Thursday that second-quarter profit fell 92 percent from a year earlier, partly because it had to keep up with steep reductions at Intel. Advanced Micro said its average selling price during the quarter sank to just $75, and Chairman Jerry Sanders said the company will continue lowering prices to keep market share. Intel reports second-quarter results tomorrow. Intel shares fell $1.06 to $29.13 today and has dropped 3.1 percent so far this year. Advanced Micro fell $1.08 to $20 and has added 45 percent in 2001.
