John, I took a look at analyst rating changes on Intel (link below).

I think you are right that Merrill's Joe Osha would have a big impact. Notice that he went from NT Accum to NT Neutral. It would make no sense to go right to buy. It would not be far fetched to see an upgrade to at least to reverse his April 23 change as long as Intel comes in line and does not guide down. That would be consistent with the less than bearish comments out of Merrill today. These two below were the last rating changes and both were not positive.

23-Apr-01 Merrill Lynch downgrade: from NT Accum
to NT Neutral

30-May-01 ABN AMRO initiated: at Hold

The big one was still the downgrade by Kumar on September 5/2000 from "Strong Buy" to "Buy". If I am not mistaken, there are 2 notches above Buy for this firm--"strong buy" and "aggressive strong buy". I don't believe we will see an upgrade from Kumar but it would have the biggest impact on the entire sector and the Nasdaq itself, imho.

It is far more likely for Osha to upgrade than Kumar because of their current low rating on the stock.
I think we may get the upgrade from Osha if Intel does not disappoint.

Actually, those neutral to bullish research notes out from Merrill today on INTEL makes me a little suspicious; it may be an alert to their clients to watch for a rating change in the near term. Obviously, the current rating is very bearish on the stock given that it is relatively safer tech stock.

I am going out on a limb and say that Osha upgrades before the open tomorrow because to do so after the earnings would be of little value and make him look like a fool. PC upgrade cycle is very near and it makes no sense to not have at least an Accumulate rating.
I am going from wishful thinking to believing it is very possible tomorrow AM. That is only because their mixed comments don't agree with their bearish rating (ie..neutral still means "sell" in analyst talk<g>). I also did not see any reference to the channel stuffing theory.<g>

BTW--My feeling is also that INTEL is not going to guide lower for the next quarter. Maybe Osha is thinking that way as well given tax rebates and XP upgrade coupons for those buying during the back to school period. Pentium 4 may finally catch on...just as their notes were indicating.
