Certainly there are huge differences between China and the US. It is often assumed here, though, that central authority really is supreme in China. This, I believe, is not very accurate; in the provinces the actual influence of central authority may be weak or nonexistent. The anthill analogy is not really very valid.

It is also a culture that is changing very fast, making it difficult to reach conclusions.
