Substitute "ethics" for "religion", and I would agree. Too many have thought that the two were the same.

Ethics grew from the need, basic in any social species, to govern conduct within social groups. Religion grew when the ethical system was manipulated to gain power for a few individuals. I see no reason to suspect that either has anything to do with any hypothetical creator of the universe.

I don't think of this as revealed truth, but it does appear to me to be the theory that best fits the available evidence.
