John F, here's the problem with ignore -- About one in ten of PE's posts is worth reading. These are mostly news items about Intel products, servers announcements, etc.

I'd rather not throw out the baby with the bath water, if I can avoid it. If selective short term banning could train Paul to be a good boy, we'd all be better off. Otherwise, if he continues his derogatory posts and he is not banned, I too will ignore him.

OT:

> re: densely packed sheet of free top quarks
> You have me there. What does that mean?

Oh, heh. :)

That's just my wanna-be physics major mind at play.

A quark is one of the most elemental of particles which make up matter. See, atoms are made of electrons, protons, and neutrons, and the protons and neutrons there are each made up of three quarks and a bunch of associated particles that I won't get into. Anyway, the funky thing about quarks is that they can never exist on their own. A quark can only exist as a constituent of another particle (such as a proton or neutron). It can, they say, never actually exist in a free state.

Regarding the ignore feature ... from a logical perspective, you are absolutely correct. I use this feature on three people on this thread, and it is fairly effective in increasing the signal to noise ratio. However, from an emotional perspective, this whole scenario presents a hard parallel to things which happened to me in my childhood. When I was a kid, I was verbally abused by larger and more aggressive children. This caused me much stress and trauma, and using the ignore feature then was not really something that was effective. So, now, when I see people harassing others in a similar fashion, I find it very difficult to detach myself emotionally.

Sorry for going off on you. Actually, what really set me off, you see, was that your initial message complaining about those who were against dissenting opinions was itself sent to someone who has a dissenting opinion on this thread. Andy Wonisch has been talking down the stock for months, saying (I believe) that AMD's management has some problems. But you seemed to treat him as if he were a category 1 poster. I just kinda got bizarrely irked by that for some reason. :)

John, Re: <And SI has this handy "Ignore" feature. Every poster on the thread can elect not to read any other person's post. But's that's not good enough, the first group want posters banned so that nobody can read the dissenting opinions.>

Nope, Just so the three Atholes can't post where I read. If I want to go where they are then I should have no gripe, but I should be able to go where they aren't also.

Every one of them is posting Off topic Insulting posts and should be banned.

They can post any kind of crap they want on the unmoderated thread.

Those who want to read their crap can go there to read it.

As a publisher, you should be sensitive to this issue. Anyone can choose not to read your material (put you on Ignore), but how would you feel if a percentage of your potential audience was denied the right to read your work (voted you off a portion of the Internet because they disagreed with your opinion)? "

Thank you for SUPERBLY highlighting the issues that the AMDroids keep dredging up !
