Of interest is that conservative vegetarians are more comfortable with it as a personal choice. I chose to become a vegetarian for a number of reasons but I never shove it down other people's throats. Of course the radical PETA movement feels otherwise. There are a huge number of older conservative vegetarians (for religious as well as health reasons). These include the 7th Day Adventists and almost all Buddhists and Hindus. This is based on Ahimsa the concept of non-violence which you referred to.
