CB -

...As for the Spanish colonies - this isn't something I am just speculating about, my undergraduate degree was in history and political science, and I studied quite a bit about the various American colonies. ...

Thank you for the interesting and descriptive commentary.

To attempt a modern day analogy, what would be the result if Spain sent a special forces team to Fort Knox and removed (assuming that any still actually remains) all the gold and returned it to Spain?

Regards, Don

Hi Cobalt,

Back from vacation hiatus now.
There's really never been a satisfactory explanation, to my satisfaction, anyway

To my simple mind your next paragraph seems to be on track. Could it be also that the British and Dutch were simply better at establishing business infrastructure and better businesses involving the New World, while the Spanish and Portuguese were more like lottery winners who blow the winnings. I would note also that the British had used their colonies as new markets, ie a renewal resource and took a secular (as in non religious) approach. Spain and Portugal were plagued by the Catholic ( and this from a practising Catholic LOL) Church, its politics and intrigues between its various orders.

Seems also that a lot more, but not all colonization took place in British and originally French colonies for the sake of a better life and freedom as opposed to getting rich quickly.

Might not modern day oil (black gold) rich countries like Saudi Arabia find themselves in a similar predicament ?

I guess 'souund business development and gold' work better in the long run than 'souls and gold' ;o)
Just my 2 cents (Canadian of course :o),

regards
Kastel

CB, that was interesting history. Thanks. The message I got from it was that just as now, in this very thread, people are confused about wealth.

Some confuse gold with wealth [Aztecs, Spaniards]
Some confuse wealth with brains

The truth is that brains are wealth [which, unfortunately, is easily turned to nothing as Mao, Stalin, Hitler and stultifying education systems have shown].

Sell gold, buy brains.

Mqurice

PS: Now I see that my comments that some races have superior DNA to others hits one of your David Duke type hot buttons! But it's true, some races are superior to others. [By the way, David Duke doesn't have any right to free speech in the sense that you needed to print his muck. You could tell him to take a hike. Free speech just means governments leave people to express their ideas, using their own media, their own money etc [or their friends'], NOT that others have to give them air time].

If you don't believe that some races are superior to others, you should see the melanoma rates in New Zealand. Those with a good dollop of melanin do much much better than pale skins. They are superior. Now, there is some stuff been developed that people can rub on their skin [or maybe it was swallow] to get melanin produced, which will avoid sunburn and skin cancer. It would help cooling too if it's hot [dark surfaces radiate heat a lot better - and absorb it too, so don't stand in the sun on a hot day].

"Superior" is measured by what is trying to be achieved. Unfortunately, the likes of your buddy David Duke, think that they have overall superiority rather than evolutionary advantage in certain ways which suited the period their DNA was being developed.

Racial superiority is a bit like 'war is good economically'. It depends...
