They're working? Harumph, no excuse.

You're weak and I'm lazy. Didn't finish the book. Maybe we can "meet" later in the days when Mrs. and Ms. More-Literate-Than-I are available. I'll cram and finish the book. -g

Meersault never seemed to see himself that way, did he?

He had a circle of friends and acquaintances who did not treat him like other. It was only with the establishment society that he was unknowingly estranged. There's a difference between feeling like other and being treated like other. I have often felt like other but rarely been so treated despite the fact that, in my adult life at least, I've let my otherness hang out for all to see. I think the fragmentation in our current society allows lots of others to have cliques where they are at least accepted if not positively reinforced. The culture clash comes when they run into the larger society in some significant way as did Meersault.

I dislike the Stranger and I didn't re-read it for this discussion. I find it deeply disturbing- because I am an empathetic humanist. In this book there is no hope. It is like being in the mind of madness. It is an alien and hopeless (imo)landscape- because madness IS being the "other". That's the whole definition. If you are sane and all the world is "crazy" the you really are the crazy one- because sanity and madness are referenced by the norm, the average, the general population. That isn't to say we can't be quietly the "other" in our heads- but when you start to act it out- as in this book- you WILL be punished, excessively.

I prefer the Plague because in that book I find hope.
