DJ Fujitsu Denies US Chip Plant Halt Report; To Cut Output TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Fujitsu Ltd. (J.FUT or 6702) said Tuesday it will „significantly“ lower the operating rate at its flash memory production plant in Oregon, but denied a local press report that it will halt output at the plant by the end of this month. The Japanese computer giant also denied the Nihon Keizai Shimbun`s report in its Tuesday evening edition saying that the company is in the final stage of talks with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) to sell the Oregon plant to the U.S. chip maker. „The production cut will begin as early as tomorrow, reflecting the severe market situation. But we can`t disclose by how much the plant operating rate will be lowered,“ a company spokeswoman said. The operating rate at its flash memory plant in Gresham, Oregon, is currently around 60%, down from 80% this spring, the official said. „We will significantly lower the rate from that level. It will be below 50%,“ she said. Fujitsu will continue with the production adjustment at the U.S. plant until the end of September. Regarding what will happen at the plant after that, „we will decide on our next move in talks with our partner AMD, while closely watching the market situation,“ the spokeswoman said. The Oregon plant receives orders from Fujitsu AMD Semiconductor Ltd., a Japan-based flash memory joint venture between Fujitsu and AMD, and supplies products to the two companies. The plant manufactured flash memory worth about Y30 billion in the business year through March, Fujitsu said. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Fujitsu`s shares ended Tuesday down 2.2% at Y1,219. The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock index dropped 1.7% to 12128.57. -By Kanji Ishibashi, Dow Jones Newswires; 813-5255-2929; kanji.ishibashi@dowjones.com -0- 17/07/01 09-49G (END) Dow Jones Newswires 17-07-01 0949GMT
