There's just no way Intel could have held a special mid-quarter update and said what they did if there was going to be any chance that they were going to disappoint with numbers or message.

I believe the mid quarter update was announced during the Q1 CC, so it was not "special", Intel was in fact obligated to have it. The "good news" from the mid-quarter update was that Intel did not lower the guidance further.
