"..wouldn't have handsets for the new network for a FEW MONTHS.."
----------

<g>

Certainly sounds like AWE is tracking Europe... in its rhetoric, distortions and delays...

Has carrier testing occured - or even begun?

If not, there's no way to tell how long it will be until viable handsets and networks exist...

Are these fuzzy, fuzzy months? <g>

I think AWE is feeling extreme pressure to influence LA TDMA carriers ..... by any means at their disposal...

And announcing commercial networks without handsets is old hat for 3GSM carriers in Europe.

but to put out a press release announcing availability of a new handset without FCC approval is absolutely idiotic.

I still havent found the handset that MOT announced this morning....but I think I am going to have to eat those words. I finally got sick of downloading the FCC pages off my 56K modem and got on a friends cable modem. Found the following GPRS handset....

gullfoss2.fcc.gov

It is the Talkabout 193...it was approved on July 12th.

commerce.motorola.com

There may be more GPRS handsets which have been approved. Generally, I have been looking at the cover letters to find out what type of handset it is....however, MOT has this listed as a GSM transceiver. I may have seen other of these and passed them up. The users guide mentions the fact that it is also GPRS.

The phone looks pretty cool...the SMS chat feature could definitely catch on.
