Standard band CDMA TIA/EIA-95 (previously called IS-95) utilizes 1.2288 Megachips per second (Mcps)
as the chip rate, resulting in a bandwidth of slightly less than 1.25 MHz.

That is really magic with an optional 48 tap filter, except if the
definition of bandwidth is kind of where it starts
beeing just a little, little less than in than
middle of the cocktail band...

Wow, transition band 1.2500-1.2288 = appr 0.0212/2 =
0.0106Mhz = 10.6kHz

That is kind of a ratio of 10/1250 = 1/125.

My direct guess would be it takes something like
a 48,000 tap filter to do that??
(pretty good, 2 out five numbers correct, could be
worse)

Then we have this other odd example of odd math.

"This is not true of the 4.096 Mcps chip rate that has been specified for the competing W-CDMA
proposal, which results in a guard band of 0 kHz, making it unacceptable from a spectral emissions perspective."

5000-4096 = 0, yes??

Even (5000-4960)/2 is more than 10.6kHz, but maybe
the numbers warp through the gilder orthogonal cosmos
space??

"The choice of a 4.096 Mcps chip rate on the other hand
allows for only four wideband CDMA carriers in the
same 20 MHz allocation, with no guard band at all."

Did he try to cram in 5, as it became "only four",
like dividing 20 by 5 gives (only) 4??

Not five like in regular math??

No wonder no operator want to have anything to do with
this fuzzy math, except if a memeber of the US cavalry
knocks on the door, or no paired 20Mhz bands can be
found because of the same cavalry.

Clarke...the harmonization of the modes is still in the works. Please do not draw premature conclusions at this point on any parameter. The key here is a single standard
supporting IS41 and GSM which was being fought by ETSI and 3GPP (essentially blowing off TABD.)

***We will now use operators to help resolve some of the other items and have already made progress.***

(how is the penetration going, smilingly and bending over,
little help by the cavalry?? Any Ruffians circling??)

and this oldie..

(1) A single, converged worldwide CDMA standard should be selected for the
third generation.

(2) The converged CDMA standard must accommodate equally the two
dominant network standards in use today (IS-41 and GSM-MAP).

(3) Disputes on specific technological points should be resolved by selecting the
proposal that either is demonstrably superior in terms of performance, features, or
cost, or, in the case of alternatives with no demonstrable material difference, the
choice that is most compatible with existing technology.

Jacobs has actually improved in these years, maybe matured??

But how could the earthly visitor be so mistaken:

"I do believe that operators will step up because it is in their interest to reduce differences where possible. Some are already doing this, so we shall see."
