Good point. I would start by saying it is that essence that persists inspite of the physical or mental make up of a person.

Do you think that losing arms or legs also deletes the essence of who you are; or, that if you add bionics it changes the essence? If so, what about when you are sleeping and they are turned off?

I will avoid, for now, the debate about when a human soul is established in conjuction with the biological host.
