Let's see if we get upgrades or downgrades in the morning. Optimism is going to win out in the end and there are lots of reasons to be optimistic. Actually, Intel's comments seemed optimistic to me as well. Here are some optimistic analyst comments out of Dan Niles.``They set a pretty high bar for themselves in terms of the third quarter,'' said Lehman Bros. analyst Dan Niles. ``Some of the numbers they gave are hard to reconcile with the data we're getting from the PC vendors.'' Here is another optimistic (sort of<g>) note from Ashok Kumar.``They're trying to drive a stake through AMD's heart,'' said US Bancorp Piper Jaffray analyst Ashok Kumar, adding that Intel is seeking to have the entry point for the Pentium 4 to be at 1.4 Gigahertz, speeds where AMD has trouble making chips profitably. Consider this important information. People assume the PC market has matured. IMHO, not true. China and India are huge markets. China demand is picking up.Remember that the Chinese can get a pirated copy of Windows but there is no way they can get a Pentium 4 that way.<g> The joke used to be that they love Microsoft software so much in the far east because it was FREE!<g> Yes, there is plenty of reason for optimism on Intel. Maybe that can answer Dan Niles' question above...new PC vendors in new markets. Right now, I like Intel more than MSFT because of the software piracy issue. Most conservative tech investors want to own the Microsoft type of safe stocks but the potential for Intel is absolutely HUGE, IMHO. Note that those new Pocket PCs that are being launched by all sorts of PC vendors after seeing Compaq's success, are going to use Intel chips...and so is the Microsoft X-Box. Compaq gave up on its own chips and decided to go with Intel for all of its server family. Yes, there is very good reason to be optimistic on Intel's future..just have to weather the near term. I just wonder if the analysts tomorrow will look at the present or the future.
