I'm responding to your post because of it's mention of EMC, which was the subject of an interesting (I thought) conversation down at the woodshop this evening. The fellow whose thoughts I'm passing along works for NTAP, and some months ago was surprised to learn that I knew of his company and where it fit in the market. This revelation has encouraged him, on occasion, to pass along some of his thoughts. He feels the next big thing will be what he calls "aggregated" memory, and that the players will not be the names we know. The thesis goes like this: Sixty-five percent (his number) of companies (that would buy products from EMC or NTAP, etc) are global, and now desire to put memory where it is most used or needed. Offices or plants in London, Tokyo, New York, now see the need to have their own local memory needs met by local systems, many of which are in place but served by Brand X, Y, or Z systems, and corporate sees a need to provide this while providing a transparent (brand neutral) system that all offices can dip into. Current brand X vendor is ill suited to develop software that will work transparently with Brand Y, or Z...because it's not in their interest to make a competitor's life easier, especially on a global basis. Currently (he claims) there are no publicly held companies in this area, but he mentions knowing of at least three start-ups with VC funding, but could not recall their names but agrees to look them up and provide them to me. He has been in several meeting with one of them, funded with $120M, operated by some ex-MSFT people. He's impressed, if you can include that along with not remembering the name. Timing: He suggests that within 18 months we'll all be wishing we'd known about it sooner. Is anyone on the thread able to flesh this out more fully? Do any of us care to stick with and monitor something so distant? Chaz
