Eric: I think the answer to the IE question is "All of the above." I believe that one of the changes Microsoft has made to mollify the various governments is to back off the stance they took during the trial that it was "impossible" to unbundle the browser from the OS. I've never used Windows XP, but from what I've read in a variety of sources, they're basically just putting components that it was initially "impossible" to remove into the XP equivalent of the "Add/Remove Programs" list. While some libraries used by IE 6.0 are also used by other applications (both from M$FT and 3rd-party ISV's) and therefore must be present, the libraries can be left in place without the specific IE user interface being installed. It has been widely noted that this M$FT technical tour-de-force of making the "impossible" possible is especially ironic now that the browser wars are a memory, Netscape is dead, and AOL-TW is making noises about getting out of the browser business entirely. As far as mail clients go, I use Eudora, but I think Outlook Express is fine, Outlook 2000 is fine, and there are probably a dozen others all with security holes. I don't see much difference among Win32 mail clients. I installed SpamKiller 2 on the advice of (I think) someone on SI. This program turns ANY mail client into a good mail client. One of the best software investments I've ever made. I think spammers are basically pickpockets and spam should be considered commercial speech unprotected by the first amendment or anything else. I do not think that spam filtering should be the responsibility of each individual: far too many individuals will never be capable of dealing with it. But in the good old law-of-the-jungle every-man-for-himself gun-totin' U.S.of A., that's just the way it is, and man, does SpamKiller 2 kill that spam real good-like. It's an amazing bargain. Whatever mail client you use, don't leave home without it. --QS
