"Government runs in the background for most people."

Now that is one of the sillier remarks of the evening.

In many people's day to day life it probably does but only because they have put their life into the framework the government provides and don't even think about all they do that is limited or controlled by the government.

It may be in the background, but it still has a big impact from the background, and can jump to the foreground in an instant.

I think that most people would disagree with you--especially in the context of the discussion I was having. Most people are not intimately aware of the machinations of their rulers. Their tax bill comes, they pay it. They get caught shoplifting dill weed, they call a television add.
