Intel, Samsung to Join Japan's Chip Development Project
July 18, 2001 (TOKYO) -- U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. and Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will participate in Japan's national project aimed at developing next-generation chip-making technology by 2007, it was learned.

The cooperation of the world's first and fourth largest foreign chipmakers is expected to speed up development.

The project -- consigned by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and led by Japan's major chipmakers like NEC Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. -- is to start this month. It will require 3.8 billion yen in funding in the current fiscal year and a total of about 30 billion yen over the seven years through fiscal 2007.

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and 25 private companies will jointly develop basic technology for the next-generation semiconductors, which are expected to be commercialized around 2010.
