Hi KHS,
Hope you don't mind the intrusion. I found my way to your post courtesy of Jay Chen on the 2001 Financial collapse thread :o)

Congratulations on your adoption. We were in Hangzou last September and adopted a little boy now 26 months.

I also made similar observations re Beijing and Hangzou, one week in each, with a good deal of time spent exploring on our own. I was surprised by the paucity of overt communist symbolism, military and otherwise, with the airports being the more 'secure' looking places. The highways from Beijing to the Great Wall and around Hangzou were good modern roads, cars and cell phones were everywhere. Actually our little guy insisted on saying 'hello' into the TV remote as it resembles of course a cell phone and I would assume his television exposure was nil.

regards
Kastel
