fly - this is a hangover of AMAT and NVLS.
Heard on CNN that that one third of capex could be withheld and not spend this year.

There is some new technologies to implement in the chip manufactories: 300mm wafer and copper (most advanced are IBM with Infineon).
Six months ago, in their CC, AMAT did not see the 300mm equipment as a hot topic before 2002-2003.

This morning, ASML (largest European equipment maker) publihed earnings:

Under the current market circumstances, the backlog as at June 30, 2001 looks reasonably robust. However, the majority of that backlog represents orders for system deliveries in 2002.
....As far as we can see now, the upturn will not happen before the second half of next year....
and on and on.
