Airtran Airways reaches tentative agreement with pilots

Wednesday, July 18, 2001

ORLANDO, FLA. -- AirTran Holdings Incorporated's AirTran Airways reached a tentative agreement with its 650 pilots on a new four-year contract. Airtran
operates three daily nonstop flights between Minneapolis-St. Paul and Atlanta.

In a press release Tuesday, the airline said the agreement was reached without the assistance of a federal mediator.

The National Pilots Association board endorsed the tentative proposal and will soon send the agreement to the pilots association membership for ratification,
AirTran said.

Terms will not be publicly disclosed until pilots complete a ratification vote, expected within about three weeks, the company said.

The entire airline industry has been roiled by lengthy labor disputes. The Bush administration -- trying to forestall a strike -- created a Presidential Emergency
Board on March 9 to broker a settlement between Northwest Airlines Corp. and its mechanics, two days before their talks broke off.

Other airlines, including Continental Airline Inc. and UAL Corporation's United Airlines, are also involved in labor talks.

American Stock Exchange-listed shares of AirTran Airways, which operates 338 daily departures to 34 cities, recently traded at $9.67, up 12 cents, or 1.3 percent, on
volume of 248,100 shares. Average daily volume is 456,141 shares.
