Don't Know why mutual fund buyers don't protect their capital better...!

I look for funds with small capitalization because of that problem. I switched out of First State's Imputation Fund which is the biggest in Australia because I saw its performance was beginning to suffer. Though they are allowed to use derivatives for hedging or to help open and close positions.

But the mythology is..., there safe for the long hawl...?

A lot of people don't know the difference between the old fashioned balanced funds and these high tech and other sector funds which are deifnitely not safe. I don't think anyone should be in a mutual fund for safety per se. There's a limit to how many good stocks I can find and know about. Not many. So I can pay a fee for someone else to do it.

But you have to find a good manager to outsource to. Most people just buy what the broker says.
