If W had some alternative position that showed a little more thought than the locally popular "global warming is a fraud", then maybe there'd be more "tolerance" of his "differing opinion".

all we have is the personal commitment of an ex president.

Doesn't it matter even a little bit that the Kyoto treaty was drafted under the Pappy Bush administration in Rio?

Our government was designed for stability, not the personal whim of the President. Good faith requires that ongoing negotiations and agreements be honored by default. If a new Administration wants to change course, it can, but it doesn't just say, oops, didn't get it signed by the swearing in so we automatically tear up the drafts and start from scratch. What if we went to war with Iraq again and Europe said that all deals for fueling, landing rights, medical support, etc. had to be reestablished because this is a new administration?

Should a US president get all upset in public if France changes how they regulate cheese

We do that all the time. We may not control the outcome, but we bellow about things we don't like and so do they. Wine. Bananas. Sugar. Hormones and antibiotics in beef. Quality of the blood supply. Mergers. All sorts of things.

it is best to face reality that the Kyoto treat was dead

Maybe in the long run a cold shower is better. Who knows. And I certainly don't mind that we're not endorsing Kyoto. I'm only objecting to the display of disrespect. It's neither nice nor smart to spit in anyone's eye, least of all one's allies.
