There is, indeed, that one escape hatch, assuming one has not already been arrested, can easily liquidate one's assets before trial, or has no impediment to flight, like bankruptcy. Also assuming that one is not ensconsed in an area with similar obnoxious laws, or can afford to relocate in a far distant territory. In the early days of the Republic, most people were pretty stuck, frankly.......

As a general rule, the more localized the authority, the more power the majority should be allowed to exert.

Under that system you had the ability to flee one State and go to a State less oppressive, or more in line with your views.
