They lived under primitive conditions of transportation, many living off of their homestead, and they were often encumbered with debts. It was no small matter to migrate. People traveling into the wilderness would take months to prepare, and frequently did so at some sacrifice, in the hope of gaining title to land under federal grants. In any event, suppose that one's offense is to teach reading to slaves. One is inclined to stay in the place that threatens one, where the slaves are. By the time one is in material danger, it is probably too late to flee, at least without substantial loss of property. Similarly, suppose that one is engaged in publishing or smuggling into the South anti- slavery pamphlets, and such activity falls under sedition laws. One will likely be hung, or at least fall under the lash, before one gets to light out to the territories.....
