OK, how is Java going to break MSFT's monopoly? If the situation were reversed (SUNW holding a monopoly with high hardware and OS price point), I could see it happen. But even if all apps were Java compatible, who do you think would dominate the OS and hardware market? Sun? Are people really clamoring for higher priced systems to have the pure Joy of running Java? Remember, there are many different flavors of kool aid. The trick is to know which brand you're drinking.
