Tom Siebel, the company's blunt CEO, spent much of a conference call warning analysts they should not expect a turnaround in the technology industry's fortunes until 2002 at the earliest.

"It's tough and it's going to get tougher. We have an exceptionally weak marketplace," Siebel said. "In our opinion, the expectations for tech companies have been set too high."
