Some interesting books re: Bible history are being written these days. I just finished one, "View from Mt. Nebo." Solid analysis of how archaeology in the Middle East is forcing Bible scholars to question the historical accuracy of the Old Testament. For instance, Solomon is generally credited as being Israel's master builder, around 1000 B.C., but the digs are uncovering evidence that most of these massive construction projects around that time actually occurred later, under Ahab. In addition, archaeological evidence suggests the scope of the Babylonian Captivity was greatly exaggerated in the Bible, and that, in fact, the Jews who were forced to Babylon (and their descendants) were much better off in Babylon than in Jerusalem.
