Right now looking at 1.7gh/256mbRDRAM/ 60-80mb HD/ great sound card, great graphics card, network card, and the firewire. Monitor 19" Triniton.

Good choice. That's a Windows 2000 machine. It will let you do whatever you need to do.

No need to wait for a deliberately crippled, booby-trapped, spyware-laden Windows XP.

I'd say go for a gig of RAM. If that sends it over budget, lose a processor in favour of the RAM.
