The weather has been cool, plus several new power plants have opened in So. Calif. recently, so CA is now in the position of having EXCESS power. Today's paper comments on CA SELLING power now -- but at lower prices than they had to buy it a mo. or so ago.

State sells high-cost
electricity at
discount

Summertime surplus sold off as
Californians keep their cool

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cool weather
throughout the West has created an abundance
of electricity in California, prompting the state
to sell power bought at an average of $138 per
megawatt-hour for as little as $1 per
megawatt-hour, energy traders say.

State officials acknowledged selling excess
electricity over the past week, but disputed the
price. They said it represented a blip in an
otherwise typical summer and that blackouts still could roll if the mercury
soars.
