"I'd recommend about two years of study before striking out on your own in biotech."

I like your choice of words. After two years of study one can "strik[e] out" in biotech.

Shouldn't you add that the successful biotech investor should obtain an M.D. or preferably a PhD? Perhaps we should also have post doctoral work as well?

An MBA would be helpful in understanding the business issues and a law degree would help with the IP patent suits.

It would also be helpful if one had a spare 30 hours per week to devote to keeping up on the stocks being followed.

Add to the above - nerves of steel, an inquiring mind and a minimal sum to start investing.

Now that I think about it - RCM Biotech Fund - MAY just have something to offer.

;-) The above may not be as big a joke as it appears.
