In particular weapons were kept after the Civil War since soldiers were closer to their homes, and civilians could pick up the valuable weapons after battles.

You don't think they would have disarmed such a bunch or troublemakers?

You don't seem to understand that England was a long ways away and the colonies had a great degree of autonomy. The British did attempt to seize weapons in Concord but the results were not to their liking.
