ST. LOUIS LAWMAKER APPARENTLY URINATES IN WASTE BASKET DURING FILIBUSTER: City
Hall is in a furor after a member of the Board of Aldermen apparently urinated
in a waste basket rather than yield the floor during a filibuster.
During meeting Tuesday, Alderman Irene Smith and three other members were
trying to hold up debate over a redistricting plan they said would hurt blacks.
Acting Adermanic President James Shrewsbury ruled Smith must yield if she
left for a restroom break. So about 40 minutes later, her aides surrounded her
with a sheet, tablecloth and quilt while she appeared to use a trash can to
relieve herself.
"What I did behind that tablecloth is my business," Smith said after the
board quit without voting on the issue.
Some aldermen were critical of Smith.
"No one was stopping her. She chose not to go to hold control of the
floor," said Alderman Kenneth Ortmann. And Alderman Kenneth Jones said
Shrewsbury's ruling was proper because filibusters are "a test to see which
side can last the longest."
Smith's allies argued that Shrewsbury disregarded common courtesy.
"This is about sensitivity to people's needs," Alderman Gregory Carter
said. "We're talking about a basic bodily function."
Supporters of Smith also complained that female aldermen are at a
disadvantage because the closest women's restroom is down the hall, while a
men's room is adjacent to the chamber. Shrewsbury, who is white, also was
accused of racism by Smith's supporters, most of whom were black.
He said he would have ruled the same way regardless of sex or race.
Mayor Francis Slay said Smith's conduct was unacceptable and could hurt the
city's image. His chief of staff, Jeff Rainford, put it this way: "The people
in Butler, Missouri, must think we're a bunch of morons."

to respond to each point from the Mensa reject of the Libertarian party:
1. Immigration creates jobs because immigrants start businesses - Dasbach's statment says nothing about the level of immigration in numbers, or the type of people who come into the country. Taking his first statement at face value, if immigration creates jobs and jobs are good, then we should import each individual living in all other nations and house the entire world's population in our country. Why? Because with a population of billions in the US, we will have more jobs. His statement shows unbelievably incomplete logic. Any attempt to modulate his blanket statement regarding the level of immigration opens up his other beliefs to massive scrutiny.
2. Immigrants start businesses that employ people - Current law allows for legal immigration. Perhaps the brain dead twerp is unaware of that.
3. "Record low unemployment coexisting with immigration indicates that immigrants create jobs" - On which planet is this guy referring to? His statement is a play on one of the oldest tricks in the political book which is as follows:
Made a true statement that everyone agrees on and follow it up with an opinion but claim that because "A" is true, then "B" must be true. But in this case, the guy can't even get that right - record low unemployment? Tell that to the people who just got canned at Motorola. LOL
4. The thrust of his arguement is that the well-being of our nation should be only measured by an increase in nominal GNP. This concept although never true, became outdated when our primate ancestors began to use the thumb for increased dexterity. He ignores quality of life issues, ecological issues, housing issues, etc.
5. Another of his points makes me think that this guy must have rubberized sheets on his bed. Immigrants provide immeasurable cultural benefits. "What would
America be like without sushi, pizza, wiener schnitzel, burritos or any
of the other foods brought to our shores by immigrants?" Dasbach asked.
"Or imagine radio stations and concert halls devoid of salsa, flamenco,
techno, or classical music, all of which originated in other nations.
Or try telling sports fans that baseball would be the same without
Sammy Sosa, tennis would as exciting without Monica Seles, or
basketball would be as much fun without Dikmbe Mutombo."
Again - our laws provide for legal immigration. He also fails to address the fact that singling out Mexicans for legal status is bizarre. Couldn't somebody have illegally come into our nation from El Salvador so why are they being discriminated against?

Finally, I think if he is personally willing to write the checks to pay for the dramatic increase in social services that will be necessary, then we should let them all in.
