There should be no surplus. You make an excellent argument that the tax cut should have been much larger.

Like hell I do. Did the national debt go to zero when we had a surplus. I hear lots of people that want their cut of the surplus, but when I ask them about their cut of the debt....it's time to slip out the side door and leave the bill behind.

The economy will drift up and down. There's nothing wrong with running occasional surplusses or deficits to maintain stability in a significant portion of the economy. In difficult economic times you might not be able to invest money in infrastructure needs [roads or defense], in good times you can do a little catch up.

That way there would have been nothing for pork addicted pols to spend..

Doesn't do it. What you and I see as Pork, Delay sees as representing his constituents, and his constituents see it that way as well. If he gives up the pork, the voters will find someone that gets the pork [their fair share]. Or, the more cynical view, if I the "constituent" can't get a little pork, you don't represent me and I see no need to donate to your campaign fund..[wink, wink]

Balanced budget amendment. BS. They, the GOP Congress, put Veterans funding and Census costs into the emergency portion of the budget, which isn't covered by the balanced budget amendment...we do have to be able to accommodate unanticipated emergency expenditures..[wink, wink]

Let's not forget that the American people want to know that FEMA is prepared to handle emergencies. [wink, wink]
