The aim of the state is what defines it position on the spectrum, not the means used to implement them. Unless committed to democratic norms, a leftist state pursues egalitarian objectives, more or less, and uses force to impose its vision of society. Similarly, unless committed to civil liberties and representative government, a rightist state pursues a traditionalist or populist- nationalist agenda, and uses force to impose its vision of society.
