Actually, for us that's a plus, not a minus. In the Great Depression, quite a number of individuals whose investment portfolio had a lot of foreign bonds were wiped out. I've ordered a book that gives the details but don't have it yet.

In 1930 the amount outstanding from Europe alone was $30 billion. There was also quite a bit to Latin America and Asia.
