It has taken 50 years of talking, convening, and consulting. But now, thanks to new initiatives in Europe and North American regarding the way farm animals must be treated, Western agriculture just might be on the brink of a revolution.

I did not realize that this issue had been around for 50 years. I first heard of veal crates in 1978 and haven't touched the meat since. It will be 2007 before they're banned in Europe and heaven only knows how long it will take here. I hope the author is right about the "brink of a revolution" but I'm not sanguine.

Rose,

Tonight on the news I was horrified to see that a local gun club holds competitions where they release thousands (I think they said 25000) pigeons and then SHOOT them.

Some animal rights people took the club to court and won an injunction, but the Appeals court came down today with a verdict in favor of the gun club, saying they did nothing wrong. I can't believe that this is legal! I am stunned.

Hi Rose,

In deference to vegetarians (and because I'm looking for any excuse to post this) here's a great recipe for crispy peanut butter bars.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars

Mix together and press into a jelly roll pan:
2 cups creamy peanut butter
1/2 cup melted butter
1 1-lb. box (or 3 1/2 c.) confectioner's sugar
3 cups Rice Krispies

Break up four plain Hershey's chocolate bars and space evenly on top. Melt the chocolate by placing the pan in a 250 degree oven for about five minute. Remove and spread the chocolate evenly over the peanut butter mixture.

Refrigerate for about an hour and cut into bars with a hot knife. Keep refrigerated.

Humans are by in large, very cruel.

Nature is very cruel. We are part of nature.

I don't think for the most part we're intentionally cruel to be cruel, the way a cat can be with a mouse. But we don't always try to be as uncruel as we can with animals, any more than we worry about being uncruel to bicycles or tomato plants.

BTW, vegetables feel pain, too. And the way we grow and harvest them is often cruel. So being a vegetarian is no solution.
